Our Mission
Read MKE’s mission: to aid in closing the reading achievement gap in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Established in May 2023 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Read MKE is dedicated to our mission of closing the reading achievement gap in Milwaukee. We provide essential reading resources to children living in book deserts throughout our community. These book deserts are often linked to poverty and low income. We take pride in supporting underserved students by ensuring they have access to the reading materials they need to succeed.
Read MKE serves all children regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status.
Our Founder
Sabrina Garner, the founder of Read MKE, brings over 25 years of experience in education, holding various roles such as Title I Reading Teacher and Reading Intervention Specialist. Sabrina firmly believes that "Reading is a foundational life skill. It is critical for learning, growth, and success." Her passion for literacy and education has driven her to create Read MKE. During our Book Giveaways, she experiences pure joy as she witnesses the excitement in children's eyes when they select their own books. This connection to the youth inspires her and reinforces the importance of our mission.
Programs and Services
Read MKE offers a variety of programs designed to provide reading resources and literacy support to children in need. Our initiatives focus on distributing books, hosting reading events, and fostering a love for reading. By addressing the unique challenges faced by students in book deserts, we aim to empower them with literacy skills and resources necessary for
academic success.
Future Goals
As we look to the future, Read MKE aims to expand our programming ensuring that more children have access to the reading resources they need. We are also excited to work towards purchasing a bookmobile and sponsoring a book vending machine to further enhance our reach and accessibility.
