Read MKE exist as a result of disproportionate gaps in reading achievement. The data is clear. Milwaukee’s test scores are significantly lower than the average reading scores statewide; however, when analyzed by race the achievement data is even more egregious. In 2022, Black students in Wisconsin had an average reading test score that was 38 points lower than that for White students..." (National Center for Educational Statistics). Segregation, poverty, and reading deserts with limited access to reading materials ratifies reading achievement gaps in Milwaukee. Everyone in every community should be outraged!
